The Richmond County Literacy Council offers help to students for Adult Basic Education through one-on-one and small classroom settings. That’s why we strive to help adults continue their education. Not only does the Literacy Council teach people how to read, but through a dedicated group of volunteers & staff, many of Richmond County’s residents enjoy a better quality of life just by gaining this basic skill.

One success story clearly illustrates this. At the age of 20, a mother of two small children found herself facing the possibility of being trapped “in the system” for the rest of her life. She wanted to become self-sufficient, but didn’t know how. Through the help she received at the Literacy Council, she was able to gain a stronger foundation in basic reading in order to achieve a high enough score to complete her General Education Diploma (GED). She is currently enrolled in at Richmond Community College. Thanks to the skills she learned, her children also have a better chance at success in education as well.
